Phthalic anhydride, an organic compound with the chemical formula C8H4O3, is a cyclic anhydride formed by dehydration within the phthalic acid molecule. It is a white crystalline powder, insoluble in cold water, slightly soluble in hot water, ether, soluble in ethanol, pyridine, benzene, carbon disulfide, etc. It is an important organic chemical material and an important intermediate in the preparation of phthalate plasticizers, paints, saccharin, dyes and organic compounds.
Application
Phthalic anhydride is an important organic chemical raw material and an important intermediate in the preparation of phthalate plasticizers, coatings, saccharin, dyes and organic compounds.
Storage method
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. The packaging must be sealed and must not be exposed to moisture. It should be stored separately from oxidising agents, reducing agents, acids and bases. Equipped with the appropriate variety and quantity of fire-fighting equipment. The storage area should be equipped with suitable materials to shelter leaks.
Emergency response to spills
Isolate the spill contaminated area and restrict access. Advise emergency responders to wear self-contained breathing apparatus and acid and alkaline resistant overalls. Do not come into direct contact with the spill.
Small spill: avoid raising dust and collect with a clean spade in a dry, clean, covered container.
Large spill: Collect for recycling or transport to waste disposal site.
First aid measures
Inhalation: Remove from the scene to fresh air quickly. Keep airway open. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If breathing stops, give immediate artificial respiration. Seek medical attention.
Accidental ingestion: Rinse mouth with water and give milk or egg white. Seek medical attention.
Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing immediately and rinse with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.
EYE CONTACT: Immediately lift eyelids and flush thoroughly with plenty of running water or saline for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.
